Statement of Purpose
National Association for Alternative Certification

The National Association for Alternative Certification advocates standards-driven programs for alternative routes to certification/licensure and promotes research-based and innovative professional development by exchanging best practices, funding and sharing research, providing networking opportunities and awarding scholarships to enhance preK-12 student achievement.

To support this mission, the association is dedicated to the recruitment and selection of adults at any point in their careers and their development into effective teachers, principals, administrators, and school support personnel.

The Association is dedicated to education improvement. Our primary focus is to facilitate the education of all children and youth so that they can enjoy meaningful and productive lives as responsible citizens in an interdependent world. We also support educators as they facilitate learning for adults.

The Association is committed to ensuring that preparation programs meet the needs of mature adults as well as those who enter educator preparation programs as part of their initial career training.

The Association endorses programs that produce educators who:

  • are knowledgeable, interested in, and current in the subject matter they teach;
  • are liberally educated, appreciate and understand educational diversity, and have benefited from on-the-job training;
  • understand and respect all children, their families and their cultural heritage;
  • establish rapport with children of all abilities, conditions, and backgrounds;
  • prepare their students to be productive citizens in the communities where they live and work;
  • model for their students an example of the work ethic through their own commitment to teaching, i.e. their planning, preparation and delivery, as well as through the pursuit of their professional development and personal growth;
  • work cooperatively with the health and human services professionals who serve students and their families, and
  • display a commitment to the total development of each student.

The Association supports programs maximizing the use of the following:

  • selection for entry into the program based upon multiple evaluation criteria and not single test scores;
  • collaboration among current high performing educators, educational institutions, and intern teachers;
  • integration of theory and practice in field-based, clinical experiences, developed to meet specific needs of the community in which the school is located, and
  • integration of technology within the delivery systems.

The Association supports on-going efforts by other organizations to improve the teaching profession. We support the provisions of legislation such as the GOALS 2000: Educate America Act of 1994, which states:

"The Nation’s teaching force will have access to programs for the continued improvement of their professional skills and the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to instruct and prepare all…students for the future."
