The Haberman Educational Foundation

Need an intern or teacher selection instrument?  Need alternative teacher certification program development or improvement?  The Haberman Educational Foundation was begun in 1994 to find good teachers for the fifteen million children in the public schols who are in poverty, at risk, resilient, diverse, or different learners.   We believe these children, whose lives outside of school may not hold as many advantages or opportunities as are afforded advantaged children, deserve the best and most appropriate teachers in school that the democracy can produce and provide.

Instead, what resilient and at risk learners too often experience is underprepared, unenthusiastic, or mismatched teachers who don't really want to be with them or who turn over frequetly, wishing more to be in suburban or advantaged schools.   In addition, we believe many diverse and often more mature individuals want, more than anything else, to make a difference with these children; however, teacher certification rules often inhibity their access into the classroom.

For this reason, The Haberman Educational Foundation teaches school district leaders where a majority of students on free and reduced lunch a 14-question scenario-based interview to find out which teachers believe in the power and potential of these youth.  If the individuals with the right beliefs are not certified, the Foundation helps school districts develop teacher certification programs to meet their needs and state requirements.

The interview has been researched, developmed, and refined over a 35-year period by Dr. Martin Haberman, Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.  Dr. Haberman's Star Teacher Selection Interview has been shown to have a 95-97% effectiveness rate in cutting down on teacher turnover and failure in a nation where 50% of all beginning teachers fail or quit in the first 3-5 years.   Not only does the instrument cut down on costly de-selections; it identifies teachers whose own resilience is well-matched to students so that test scores, interest, and attendance go up; principal referrals go down.

Delia Stafford-Johnson is the Founding President of The Haberman Educational Foundation and the National Center for Alternative Teacher Certification Information at The Haberman Educational Foundation in Houston, Texas.  For nearly a decade she directed the largest alternative certification program in Texas, a program which consistently used The Star Teacher Interview.  Ms. Stafford-Johnson was twice recognized by the Whitehouse in formal cermonies for her program's excellence.  Dr. Vicky Schreiber Dill is the Senior Researcher for The Haberman Educational Foundation and The National Center for Alternative Teacher Certification Information (NCATCI) at The Haberman Educational Foundation.  She authored the seminal chapter on Alternative Teacher Certification in The Handbook of Teacher Education Research as well as an upcoming book on school violence to be publsihed by Phi Delta Kappa.

Information on how to learn the teacher selection interview that identifies turnaround teachers or teachers speciall selected for their excellence with resilient or under-resourced children can be obtained by calling The Haberman Educational Foundation at 713-667-6185 or e-mail may be sent to d.staff@ix.netcom.com or dillhome@midusa.net .  Turnaround or star teachers -- it only takes one to save a life.
